Sunday at Walnut Hill Church

This Sunday, May 2, at Walnut Hill Church...

Sunday Conversations, 10am, Trinity Hall

"In the Absence of God"

As Christians living within a culture of fanaticism, materialism,
and greed, is it possible to bridge our religious differences and
dwell in harmony in the twenty-first century? In this video, "In the
Absence of God," Sam Keen believes that a new understanding
of the role of religion in our lives is essential for this to happen,
and that nothing less than our existence hangs in the balance.

Walnut Hill Church Weekly Letter

Wednesday, April 28, 2010

Greetings to all!

You might have heard/seen the recent news story about the young girl who
went missing in Florida for four days before being found and returned to her
family.  Diana Garland remembers her family's experience of a missing child,
who fortunately was also safely returned, and the lessons learned from it
about the support available to families through their faith communities.

That fall evening had a happy ending, largely but not solely because John was
found.  There was also true joy in finding myself enveloped by a loving
community of faith.  The colleague who happened by called his wife, who called
another wife, and in less than one hour from John's disappearance, close friends
were standing with me in the cold dark parking lot and others were gathered
in homes to pray.  Upon arriving home, I found my pastor waiting for me, and
the phone ringing with concerned friends.  John's first words to me upon
emerging from the police car were, "I'm sorry, please don't tell anyone."  But
family secrets are hard to keep in a community of faith and, much of the time,
that is as it should be.  Not only did we receive support, but children throughout
the community had long talks with parents about what happened to us and
what they could do in such situations.  In a community of faith, families learn
from one another's experiences.

Randall, a Yankunytjatjara elder from Ayers Rock in Australia,
speaks about the traditional Aboriginal view that "the land
owns us."

Walnut Hill Church Weekly Letter

Wednesday, April 21, 2010

Greetings to all!

One of the more recent developments in earth stewardship is the growing
attention to sustainable agriculture, particularly household, community, and
even church gardens, like the one at Walnut Hill, now in its second growing
season.   Such gardening is new for many of us.  We might identify with the
experience of one writer, an English professor, by the name of Lionel Basney.

A little over fifteen years ago my wife and I began growing fruit and vegetables
for ourselves.  Fifteen years of spades and stakes, mulch, weeds and compost;
of rushing to get the garden in amid the hysterical busyness of the end of the
academic semester; of catching our breath when the onions leap up and run
along the surface of the ground like green flames.
We started out, a little vaguely, to be organic gardeners. Otherwise our
notions of what we were getting ourselves into were limited.  My wife had helped
her mother garden and so knew more than I did.  I had planted flowers and hewed
sinks for bushes out of the stiff hill-country clay.  Still I remember standing one
spring morning in the modest weed-patch we meant to make into a garden, and
wondering out loud how to get started.
My mother was standing nearby, and she answered me without a word.  She
reached for my hoe, stuck it into the weeds, flipped a small slab of sod over on its
back and gave it that glancing whack that loosens soil from roots - the slight
violence that starts the whole process, opening the earth to warmth and water,
making the bacteria swarm.  The she handed the hoe back to me, still without
speaking.  That was how to start.
(from An Earth-Careful Way of Life)

Blessing the Garden:  Weather permitting on Sunday, April 25, immediately
after worship, we will offer a simple blessing of the Walnut Hill Garden.  All are
welcome, both active gardeners and those of us who will have the joy of
watching the garden grow.

Walnut Hill Church Weekly Letter

Wednesday, April 14, 2010

Greetings to all!

PBS recently broadcast a program on the life and teachings of the Buddha.  Among
the persons interviewed for the program was the Dalai Lama.  What a wonderful spirit
His Holiness displays.  The Catholic writer, Henri Nouwen,  offers some reflections on the
Dalai Lama.

I know few people who have seen as much suffering as the Dalai Lama.  As the spiritual
and political leader of Tibet he was driven from his own country and witnessed the
systematic killing, torture, oppression, and expulsion of his people.  Still, I know of few
people who radiate so much peace and joy...
How is it possible that a man who has been subjected to such persecution is not filled
with anger and a desire for revenge?  When asked that question the Dalai Lama
explains how, in his meditation, he allows all the suffering of his people and their
oppressors to enter the depth of his heart, and there to be transformed into compassion.
What a spiritual challenge!  While I anxiously wonder how to help people...the Dalai
Lama calls me to gather all the suffering of the people of this world in the center of my
being and to become there the raw material for my compassionate love.

(Pray for the people of Tibet, particularly in response to today's earthquake in that
region.)

Walnut Hill Church Weekly Letter

Wednesday, April 7, 2010

Greetings to all!

This week's tragedy in West Virginia makes us mindful of the many
persons who do dangerous work for our security or comfort.  Consider
the following prayer for all those whose work is particularly dangerous.

God of earth and air, height and depth: we pray for those who work in
danger above, below, or on the earth.  Give them caution and a concern
for one another, so that in safety they may do what must be done, under
your watchful love, in Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.
