Sunday at Walnut Hill Church

This Sunday, July 1, at Walnut Hill Church...

Sunday Conversations, 10am, Trinity Hall

Paul's Letter to American Christians

A large portion of the New Testament consists of letters written by
the apostle Paul to Christians living in various places around the
Roman Empire. If he lived today, what sort of letter might Paul write
to Christians living in America?  A few decades ago, Martin Luther
King, Jr., offered a response to this question in his speech,
Paul's Letter to American Christians.  That "letter" will serve as
the focus of our conversation.

Come enjoy a cup of coffee, join the conversation, or just listen in.

If you would like to read the letter in advance of our conversation, go to...

Text:  Romans 13:1-7

The sacrament of Holy Communion.

Walnut Hill Church Weekly Letter

Wednesday, June 27, 2012

Greetings to all!

The current dry spell, in some places drought, reminds me of an essay
by Kathleen Norris reflecting on her life in South Dakota, particularly
the fellowship at Hope Church, located in the town of Hope, SD.

One former minister of Hope who had come from the urban East
told me that her strongest memory of Hope Church was of an evening
service in July.  Standing in the pulpit she could see down the length
of the church and out the open door to a large round bale of hay
catching the last rays of the sunlight.  "It was dark on one side and
pure gold on the other," she said, "and I thought, that's a measure of
wealth here, that will help make things come out right this year."

She also told me that she couldn't imagine what was happening
at the first funeral service she conducted for a member of Hope Church
when, as people gathered at the graveside service, the men, some
kneeling, began studying the open grave.  It was nearly November,
and someone explained that they were checking the frost and moisture
levels in the ground.  They were farmers and ranchers worried about a
drought.  They were mourners giving a good friend back to the earth.
They were people of earth, looking for a sign of hope.

Walnut Hill Church Weekly Letter

Wednesday, June 6, 2012

Greetings to all!

Sixty-eight years ago today, June 6, 1944, thousands of Allied troops
landed on the beaches around Normandy, France.  It is difficult, perhaps
impossible, for most of us to fully understand what that experience
must have been like for all those involved.  It is an occasion to be mindful
of the horrific toll that war exacts from both nations and individuals, an
occasion to pray for an end to warfare in the present and future.  General
Eisenhower's orders that day in 1944 included these words...

You are about to embark on the Great Crusade, toward which we have
striven these many months.  The eyes of the world are upon you.  The
hopes and prayers of liberty-loving people everywhere march with you.
In company with our brave Allies and brothers-in-arms on other fronts,
you will bring about the destruction of the German war machine, the
elimination of Nazi tyranny over the oppressed peoples of Europe, and
security for ourselves in a free world...Good luck! And let us beseech
the blessing of Almighty God upon this great and noble undertaking.
(from Order of the Day: 6 June 1944)

In Memory:  Jean (Schwert) Coplin departed this life on June 2.  Jean and
her late husband, George Schwert, were faithful members of  Walnut Hill
Church.  A graveside service for Jean will be held at Lexington Cemetery
on Thursday, June 7, 11:30am.  Visitation will be on Wednesday, June 6,
5 - 7pm, at Milward-Southland.

Preaching for the next three Sundays at Walnut Hill Church:
*Sunday, June 10 - The Rev. Dr. John Cavendish
*Sunday, June 17 - The Rev. Rollin Tarter
*Sunday, June 24 - The Rev. Janet Prewitt

might open new paths of reflection for us today.
