Walnut Hill Church Weekly Letter

Wednesday, July 20, 2016

Greetings to all!

Amid seemingly continuous reports of tragedies and violence, along with
public discourse that is often anything but civil, it is easy for one's spirit to
be dragged down into discouragement and even despair.  While it is
important to be informed and engaged regarding the world's troubles, it
is equally important to be watching, even looking, for the good to be found
around us and within us.  At no time in my recent memory have the words
of the Apostle Paul seemed more relevant… In conclusion, my friends, fill
your minds with those things that are good and that deserve praise:  things
that are true, noble, right, pure, lovely and honorable (Philippians 4:8).
Especially these days, let us spend some time every day contemplating
that which is good in nature, in human events, in our relationships, and in
our own hearts.

William "Bill" Gray, a member of Walnut Hill Church, departed this life on
Tuesday, July 19.  Bill is survived by his wife (Lyland), as well as by his
children (Graham and Carolyn) and their families.  Service details are
pending.  Milward Funeral Directors is in charge of arrangements.

Saturday Coffee - Walnut Hill men are invited to gather for coffee and
conversation each Saturday morning, 8am, at Paneras on Richmond Rd.
Feel free to stop by for as long or short a time as your schedule allows.
No rsvp required.

Sunday Conversations continue each Sunday, 10am, in Trinity Hall. Our
conversations for the next three Sundays will focus around TED Talks. Come
enjoy a cup of coffee, join the conversation, or just listen in.

Preaching for the next three Sundays at Walnut Hill Church will be…
*Sun, July 24 - Sandra Moon - Director of Alum and Church Relations
at Louisville Seminary.
*Sun, July 31 - John Cavendish - Pastor Emeritus of Walnut Hill
Church.
*Sun, Aug 7 - James Stillwell - Licensed Pastoral Counselor

Trinity Hall Improvements - Work is scheduled to begin soon in Trinity Hall
toward the goal of making several classroom spaces more usable for both
the Church and the Day School. The goal is to have these spaces available
for both church and school use by September 1.  It is not expected that this
work will affect our regular Sunday activities.  Feel free to contact any Vestry
member if you have questions about the details.

Cycling Ride Update - Thanks to all who participated in our hosting of the
Fifth Annual Walnut Hill Bike Ride last Saturday, July 16.  Approximately
150 cyclists plus numerous hospitality volunteers were on site.  Nearly
$2,000 was received in individual contributions along with $1,500 in business
sponsorships.  All proceeds from the event will go toward purchasing bikes
for refugee families.

The Weekly Letter will be on summer break for the next two weeks.  Look
for your next Weekly Letter on Wednesday, August 10.

Peace to all.

Walnut Hill Church Weekly Letter

Wednesday, July 13, 2016

Greetings to all!

As the nation continues to mourn the deaths of five Dallas police officers while
simultaneously wrestling with occasions of the use of deadly force by police and
societal violence in general, we become aware of how much work there is to be done
in the healing of our national life.  I hope that we, as people of faith, might see that
healing as our particular calling.  We might begin our work with prayer:

God of the ages, in your sight nations rise and fall, and pass through difficult times.
Now when our land is troubled, be near to judge and save. May leaders be led by
your wisdom;  may they search your will and see it clearly.  May the people seek
the good of their neighbors as well as their own.  Where we have failed to live in
to our best ideals, grant us renewed vision to see and live toward them.  Give us
your light and truth to guide us; through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of this world,
and our Savior.  Amen.
(adapted from the Book of Common Worship)

Walnut Hill Church Weekly Letter

Wednesday, July 6, 2016

Greetings to all!

Elie Wiesel, Holocaust survivor, writer, and advocate/activist for human dignity and
human rights, died on July 2.  His voice lives on…

Human suffering anywhere concerns men and women everywhere…As long as one
dissident is in prison, our freedom will not be true.  As long as one child is hungry, our
life will be filled with anguish and shame. What all these victims need above all is to
know that they are not alone; that we are not forgetting them, that when their voices
are stifled we shall lend them ours, that while their freedom depends on ours, the
quality of our freedom depends on theirs…We know that every moment is a moment
of grace, every hour an offering; not to share them would mean to betray them.  Our
lives no longer belong to us alone; they belong to all who need us desperately.

Summer of Hospitality, Part 2

Dear Walnut Hill Members and Friends:

The July 4th Holiday just past signals the traditional mid-point of the summer season.  I hope that your summer has been enjoyable thus far, including Sunday mornings at Walnut Hill for worship and fellowship.  With that in mind, this special email is being sent to invite you to visit Walnut Hill's online refreshment sign up sheet and to host one Sunday during the second half of the summer season.    Please note that we have openings beginning this Sunday, July 10.

Here is the link:  Online Sign Up Sheet

If you prefer, you can navigate to the sign up sheet via the Walnut Hill Church website,  www.walnuthillchurchky.org .  ( select the tab "After Church Food Reservations")

When you get to the page, the process is quite simple:

*Select a Sunday that works for you, and click on "edit".

*Find your name in the dropdown box and select it

*If others are working with you, you can type their names in the "comments" box.

*Click "submit."

If you do not see your name in the dropdown box, that simply means we did not have your email on file at the time the list was created.  Let us know, and we will update it.  In the meantime, you can sign up by selecting "new" in the dropdown box and typing your name in the comments section.

If you have any questions or problems using the online sign up, simply let us know by reply email.  Also, you can still sign up via the traditional sign up sheet in the Sanctuary foyer.

Let me take this opportunity to remind us all how important the after worship gathering is for our life together at Walnut Hill as it provides opportunity for us to make and deepen acquaintances and friendships.

Let me also say that the after worship refreshments need not be elaborate, just something simple to gather around for our fellowship time.

Please take a moment to select a Sunday, so that we might all continue to enjoy a Summer of Hospitality!

Thanks to all our hosts!

Peace,

Mike Ward
