Walnut Hill Church Weekly Letter

Wednesday, June 26, 2013

Greetings to all!

Along with his family and fellow South Africans, the world has been keeping
vigil with Nelson Mandela.  As he approaches the end of his life on this earth,
consider these words spoken by Mr. Mandela shortly after his release from
prison in 1990.  Whose names come to your mind as you read Mandela's
words?

For thousands of years and one generation after another, the human
race has thrown up men and women of love, vision and boundless
courage.  It is thanks to these towering giants that our humanness has
always remained with us and will always remain with us, no matter how
difficult the challenges history throws at us from one historic era to another.

Walnut Hill Church Weekly Letter

Wednesday, June 19, 2013

Greetings to all!

Summer is camp season:  Basketball camp, soccer camp, space camp, etc.,
and yes, church camp. A recent blog post from Camp Burnamwood offers a
glimpse of what campers experienced on their last full day (Friday) of the
"Senior High Conference."

Hope.  What gives you hope?  What, if anything, makes you question hope?

Campers started the day off with a little origami.  That's right, origami.
Campers made origami fruit to resemble their fruit of hope.  Relays
involving sponges and water (hoping not to get too wet) ensued shortly
thereafter.

Throughout the week each small group has been painting a piece to be
put onto the cross on the dam.  This will be dedicated on Saturday morning.
Today each of the small groups finished their piece.  Very impressive.
Picture tomorrow of the pieces.

Tonight was the annual dance.  Cupid Shuffle, Taylor Swift, Don't Stop
Believin', you know it!  Campers danced and danced and danced.

Worship followed with a message on hope.  The campfire was one of the
best I've ever seen.  I've Got the Joy, Joy, Joy, Kumbayah, and Pharaoh -
Pharaoh were sung as loudly as possible.  Fellowship, fun, and smores.
What else could you ask for on a Friday night?

Walnut Hill Church Weekly Letter

Wednesday, June 12, 2013

Greetings to all!

Father's Day provides an occasion to reflect upon the often
complicated relationships that we experience in our families. In
his book, Here and Now, Henri Nouwen reflects on the possibilities
of such relationships in the context of Jesus' words about "leaving"
father and mother (MK 10:29-30).

One of the most beautiful things that can happen in a human
life is that parents become brothers and sisters for their children,
that children become fathers and mothers for their parents, that
brothers and sisters become friends and that fatherhood,
motherhood, brotherhood, and sisterhood are deeply shared by
all the members of the family at different times and on different
occasions.

But this cannot happen without leaving.  Only to the degree
that we have broken the ties that keep us captives of an imperfect
love can we be free to love those we have left as father, mother,
brother, sister and receive their love in the same way...The great
mystery of leaving father and mother is, indeed, that their limited
love will multiply and manifest itself wherever we go, because
only insofar as we leave, can the love we clung to reveal its true
source.

Walnut Hill Church Weekly Letter

Wednesday, June 5, 2013

Greetings to all!

In his recent book, My Bright Abyss, author/poet Christian Wiman
reflects on his experience of faith in the context of several years
living with cancer.  In this passage, he considers how faith changes
over the course of one's life...

In fact, there is no way to "return to the faith of your childhood,"
not really, not unless you've just woken from a decades-long
and absolutely literal coma.  Faith is not some half-remembered
country into which you come like a long-exiled king, dispensing
the old wisdom, casting out the radical, insurrectionist aspects
of yourself by which you'd been betrayed.  No. Life is not an
error, even when it is.  That is to say, whatever faith you emerge
with at the end of your life is going to be not simply affected by
that life but intimately dependent upon it, for faith in God is, in
the deepest sense, faith in life - which means that even the
staunchest life of faith is a life of great change.  It follows that
if you believe at fifty what you believed at fifteen, then you have
not lived - or have denied the reality of your life.
