Walnut Hill Church Weekly Letter

Tuesday, December 30, 2014*

Greetings to all!

As it has been in 2014, so too one thing for sure about 2015 is
that it will include surprises, some of which will seem happy to
us, others not so.  Henri Nouwen reflects on the element of
surprise to be experienced not only every year, but also every
day.

Each day holds a surprise.  But only if we expect it can we see,
hear, or feel it when it comes to us.  Let's not be afraid to receive
each day's surprise, whether it comes to us as sorrow or as joy.
It will open a new place in our hearts, a place where we can
welcome new friends and celebrate more fully our shared
humanity.

Walnut Hill Church Weekly Letter

Tuesday, December 23, 2014*

Greetings to all!

Christmas is upon us, and our imaginations are filled with all the
traditional characters of the season including Mary, Joseph, the
innkeeper, the stable animals, the angels, the shepherds, the magi,
and of course, the infant Jesus.  In his sermon, "The Birth," Frederick
Buechner reflects on the Christmas story from the perspective of one
of the shepherds trying to describe the experience.

Can I make you understand, I wonder?  Have you ever had this
happen to you?  You have been working hard all day.  You're dog-
tired, bone-tired.  So you call it quits for a while.  You slump down under
a tree or against a rock or something and just sit there in a daze for half
an hour or a million years, I don't know, and all this time your eyes are
wide open looking straight ahead someplace but they're so tired and
glassy they don't see a thing.  Then, little by little, you begin to come to,
then your eyes begin to come to, and all of a sudden you find out you've
been looking at something the whole time except it's only now you really
see it - one of the ewe lambs maybe, with its foot caught under a rock, or
the moon scorching a hole through the clouds.  It was there all the time,
and you were looking at it all the time, but you didn't see it till just now.
That's how it was this night, anyway.  Like finally coming to- not things
coming out of nowhere that had never been there before, but things just
coming into focus that had been there always.  And such things!

Walnut Hill Church Weekly Letter

Wednesday, December 17, 2014

Greetings to all!

If the path to Christmas might be thought of as a "spiritual pilgrimage" to
Bethlehem, then this year's journey seems to be taking us through some
challenging territory.  We need only mention places like Ferguson, Sydney,
Manila, and Peshawar (Pakistan) to think of the troubles facing the human
community, and these not even to mention the local "places" of our own
lives that might make us abandon the journey. As we travel, let us not forget
that such "places" do not contradict the Christmas story, but rather remind us
that its message of peace, hope, joy, and love are as needed today as they
were 2,000 years ago.  I am reminded of a poem by Ann Weems.

In each heart lies a Bethlehem,
an inn where we must ultimately answer
whether there is room or not.
When we are Bethlehem-bound
we experience our own advent in his.
When we are Bethlehem-bound
we can no longer look the other way
conveniently not seeing stars
   not hearing angel voices.
We can no longer excuse ourselves by busily
tending our sheep or our kingdoms.

This Advent let's go to Bethlehem
and see this thing that the Lord has made known to us...
This Advent, let's go to Bethlehem
   and find our kneeling places.

Bethlehem)

Walnut Hill Church Weekly Letter

Wednesday, December 10, 2014

Greetings to all!

Today, Dec 10, is "Human Rights Day," first proclaimed in 1950
following the adoption (1948) of the Universal Declaration of Human
Rights.* In their best moments, the world's great religions have given
voice to the "inherent dignity ... and equal and inalienable rights of all
members of the human family."  In their less than best moments, the
world's great religions, including Christianity, have failed to recognize
that dignity. Among the biblical themes related to human rights are
freedom, justice, and peace..

Biblical history is freedom history.  To be created in the image of
God is to be given the gift of freedom and the awesome responsibility
that goes with that gift.  Our true identity and full potential can only
be realized in freedom.  Authentic and mutual acceptance in human
relations is made possible in the context of freedom.
Justice is required in human relations and in the ordering of social
structures, not because we thereby prove ourselves worthy by acts of
justice, but because we are responding gratefully to our oneness in
creation and our oneness in Christ.  Justice in the Bible is both an
ethical term and a salvation term.
As justice is possible only in the context of freedom, so peace is
possible only in the context of justice.  Peace involves reconciliation,
trust and wholeness.  Wholeness, i.e., life lived in integrity, security
and realization of human potential, is possible only in a loving, forgiving,
accepting community of persons, where the value of personhood has
priority over that of property, race or social status.

Walnut Hill Church Weekly Letter

Wednesday, December 3, 2014

Greetings to all!

This past Sunday we entered the season of Advent as we recall the good
news of God's love embodied in the story of Jesus, and as we anticipate
the fulfillment of God's love in our lives and in the world.  In this "between
time" we wait, we hope, we work to make our lives and the world ready for
what God is doing and will do.  It is a mysterious blending of God's work
and our work.
Let us observe this Advent season with less frenetic activity and more
intentional thoughts, words, and actions that communicate to others and to
ourselves the good news of God's love such as: taking time to read and
reflect on the scripture texts for the Sundays of Advent; visiting, phoning, or
writing a note to someone who would be cheered by being remembered;
engaging some form of service beyond our immediate circle of family or
friends.  The possibilities are endless, and so too are the blessings of
preparing ourselves and our world for the good news that lies just ahead.

The scripture lessons for Sun, Dec 7, the Second Sunday of Advent...
   Isaiah 40:1-11
   2 Peter 3:8-15
   Mark 1:1-8

Sunday Conversations continue this Sun, Dec 7, 10am, in Trinity Hall,
part two of a scripture study titled, "Isaiah: The Voice of Advent."  Our focus
for this Sunday is Isaiah 40:1-11.

The Children's Choir will meet this Sun, Dec 7, 10am, in Trinity Hall.
Children through elementary age are invited to gather for music and
singing in preparation for the children's Christmas pageant and presentation
on Sun, Dec 14.

THE CHRISTMAS POTLUCK is this Sun, Dec 7, immediately after
morning worship.  Bring a salad, side dish, or dessert, and enjoy this
delicious Walnut Hill tradition.  Meat and beverage will be provided.

The Giving Tree:  Thanks to all who selected ornaments off the Giving
Tree last Sunday.  Each ornament suggests a gift for a Lexington area
child/youth.  In case you missed it last Sunday, a few ornaments remain to
be selected.  Please return your Giving Tree gift, with the accompanying
ornament, by Sunday, December 21.

Walnut Hill Church Weekly Letter

Tuesday, November 25, 2014*

Greetings to all!

Monday night's events in Ferguson, Missouri, and across the country,
echo around us as the nation prepares to celebrate Thanksgiving.
Those events do not negate the occasion to be thankful for our shared
life as a nation, but they remind us that our prayers of thanksgiving are
linked to our prayers of confession, supplication, and petition for our
life as a people.  With this mind, consider this prayer for your
Thanksgiving reflection ...

Great God of all nations:
Thank you for this land, which we call home,
Its abundance, its opportunities, its freedoms, its ideals.
We are grateful for the blessings we share as a people.
As we pray with thanksgiving, we also pray with hope,
That division might be healed, inequity lessened,
Generosity expanded, and justice experienced by all.
We commit ourselves to these ends,
And we ask your guidance and grace to meet them,
For the blessing of all people, and for the glory of your Name.
Amen.

Walnut Hill Church Weekly Letter

Wednesday, November 19, 2014

Greetings to all!

I have been impressed by the response of the parents of the young
man recently executed by terrorists.  Their grief is obvious, and so too
their grace.  I do not know their religious affiliation, but whatever it
might be, their public presence is an inspiration to all those, including
me, who wonder if it is possible to meet hatred with love, violence
with peace, evil with good.   Consider this brief portion of their
public statement as a call to prayer for people of all faiths, including
us.

"...We ask for people to continue to pray for the safe return of all captives
being held unjustly and all people being oppressed around the
world, and especially for the people of Syria, a land our son loved."

The lectionary texts for November 23, the Sunday of Christ the King:

Walnut Hill Church Weekly Letter

Wednesday, November 12, 2014

Grace to all and Peace!

"Brothers and sisters, join in imitating me, and observe those
who live according to the example you have in us."
In his Letter to the Philippians, the apostle Paul is bold to invite
his readers to "imitate" him in living the life of faith.  We might not
be quite so bold as to "invite" others to imitate us, but the truth is that
people do observe us, and they learn from what they see.  We are
all "role models" for others, which is not intended to make us self-
conscious in our living, even less to suggest that we should "act out"
our lives rather than authentically live them as we are.
Nevertheless, our lives are not lived in isolation; rather, we live in
community with others.  What we do affects and influences those
around us.  Being conscious of that reality will not make us perfect
in our living, but it might help us at times to choose to be our best
selves, to our own and others' benefit.

Citizenship

Twice in Paul's letter to the Philippians he uses a word that
roughly translates to our word "citizenship"   (1:27 & 3:20).
What might that word have meant to Paul, and what might it

Grace to all and Peace!

On this post-election day, ordinary folks and experts alike are counting
the gains and losses.  The experience of "gains and losses" is not limited
to politics, but rather is an inevitable part of the human experience.
Henri Nouwen offers some thoughts about the "losses" of our lives.

Better to mourn your losses than to deny them.  Dare to feel your
losses.  Dare to grieve them.  Name the pain and say, "Yes, I feel real
pain, real fear, real loss; and I am going to embrace it.  I will take up
the cross of my life, and accept it."  To grieve is to experience the pain
of your life and face the dark abyss where nothing is clear or settled,
where everything is shifting and changing.  To fully grieve is to allow
your losses to tear apart feelings of false security and safety and lead
you to the painful truth of your brokenness and dependence upon
God alone.  Finally, you come to the point where you honestly can say:
"Yes, yes, yes!  This is my life, and I accept it."

Walnut Hill Church Weekly Letter

October 29, 2014

Grace to you and peace!

This Saturday, November 1, is All Saints' Day, an occasion to not only
remember persons of the past, but also to be encouraged and inspired
for our living today.  The Catholic spiritual teacher, Henri Nouwen,
describes the Church as a "garden" in which saints bloom.

The Church is a very human organization but also a garden of God's
grace.  It is a place where great sanctity keeps blooming.  Saints are
people who make the living Christ visible to us in a special way.  Some
saints have given their lives in the service of Christ and his Church;
others have spoken or written words that keep nurturing us; some have
lived heroically in difficult situations; others have remained hidden in
quiet lives of prayer and meditation; some were prophetic voices
calling for renewal; others were spiritual strategists setting up large
organizations or networks of people;  some were healthy and strong;
others were quite sick, and often anxious and insecure.  But all of
them in their own ways lived in the Church as in a garden where
they heard the voice calling them the Beloved and where they found
the courage to make Jesus the center of their lives.

Wednesday, October 22, 2014

Grace to you and peace!

Last Sunday we mentioned the act of "making one's voice heard"
regarding matters of justice, mercy, and compassion as a public, and
sometimes risky, expression of the spiritual practice of "bearing witness."
"Bearing witness," whatever its public expression, begins as a simple
openness to life as it is.  Consider the following...

Life is filled with opportunities for bearing witness to the positive and
negative experiences in our world.  When we do not turn away from
what brings pain or what brings happiness, we acknowledge that both
always exist - even in the same instant. When we can fully open ourselves
to all the delights and challenges to which we and others are heir, without
picking and choosing which ones we will attend, we can be part of the
tapestry of life around us.  Open to both painful and joyful events, we see
our interconnection to everything around us even as we recognize that
sometimes the only role we can play is to bear witness.
With an open heart, may I bear witness to all of life's joy and suffering,
that I may share the gift of sympathetic joy for others' happiness and
compassion for their sorrow.

Walnut Hill Church Weekly Letter

Wednesday, October 15, 2014

Grace to you and peace:

The absence/presence of God is a traditional topic in spiritual writings.
In his recent book, My Bright Abyss, Christian Wiman challenges the
sense that many people have of God's absence from them.

It is among the most difficult spiritual ailments to heal, because it is
usually wholly illusory.  There are definitely times when we must
suffer God's absence, when we are called to enter the dark night of
the soul in order to pass into some new understanding of God, some
deeper communion with God and with all creation.  But this is very
rare ... God is not absent.  God is everywhere in the world we are too
dispirited to love.  To feel God - to find God - does not usually require
that we renounce all worldly possessions and enter a monastery, or
give our lives over to some cause of social justice, or create some sort
of sacred art, or begin spontaneously speaking in tongues.  All too
often the task to which we are called is simply to show a kindness to
the irritating person in the cubicle next to us, say, or touch the face of
a spouse from whom we ourselves have been long absent, letting
grace wake love from our intense, self-enclosed sleep.

Walnut Hill Church Weekly Letter

Wednesday, October 8, 2014

Greetings to all!

Exploring Our Spirituality (EOS) begins this Sunday, October 12.
Our theme for the season will be "Rejoice in the Lord, Always," and
the springboard for our reflection will be the Letter to the Philippians
as found in the New Testament.  In a sense, to explore our spirituality
is simply another way of exploring our lives, with particular attention
to that which connects us to each other, to this world, and to that
which animates all reality, including ourselves.  Sometimes we
notice that connection spontaneously, without effort or intention.
For others, that sense of connection is deepened by simple practices
that help them slow down and open their ears, eyes, and hearts.
The EOS season is no more,  no less, than an opportunity for us as
individuals and as a community to slow down, look, and listen.
Blessings to all as we begin this season of exploration.

Sunday at Walnut Hill Church

This Sunday, September 28, at Walnut Hill Church...

Sunday Conversations, 10am, Trinity Hall

Moses:  Fact of Myth?

Moses is a central character in the story of the Exodus
from Egypt and the establishment of Israel as a people.
Was Moses an historical figure or a composite character
of Israel's tradition?  What difference, if any, does it make
for our reading of the Exodus narrative?  As a starting
point for our conversation, consider this NOVA interview
with Professor Carol Meyers.

A Fall of Hospitality

Dear Walnut Hill Members and Friends:

This special email is being sent to remind you about, and invite you to visit, Walnut Hill's online refreshment sign up sheet.

Here is the link:  After Church Refreshments

If you prefer, you can navigate to the sign up sheet via the Walnut Hill Church website,  www.walnuthillchurchky.org .  (click on "Links,"  then select "After Church Food Reservations")

When you get to the site, the process is quite simple:

*Select a Sunday that works for you, and click on "edit".

*Find your name in the dropdown box and select it

*If others are working with you, you can type their names in the "comments" box.

*Click "submit."

Once you have signed up, you will receive an email confirmation.  You will also receive an email during the week leading up to your Sunday.

By the way, if you do not see your name in the dropdown box, that simply means we did not have your email on file at the time the list was created.  Let us know, and we will update it.  In the meantime, you can sign up by selecting "new" in the dropdown box and typing your name in the comments section.

If you have any questions or problems using the online sign up, simply let us know by an email to Nelson (you can send an email to Nelson via the sign up sheet web page) or to me  ( mward@walnuthillchurchky.org ).  Also, you can still sign up via the traditional sign up sheet on Sunday mornings.

Let me take this opportunity to remind us all how important the after worship gathering is for our life together at Walnut Hill as it provides opportunity for us to make and deepen acquaintances and friendships.

Let me also say that the Sunday refreshments need not be elaborate, just something simple to gather around for our fellowship.

Please take a moment to select a Sunday, so that we might all enjoy a Fall of Hospitality!

Thanks to all our hosts!

Peace,

Mike Ward

Walnut Hill Church Weekly Letter

Wednesday, September 24, 2014

Greetings to all!

Yesterday at the United Nations was the 2014 Global Summit on Climate Change.
In that spirit, consider these thoughts from Bartholomew I, Ecumenical Patriarch of
Constantinople, spiritual leader of Eastern Orthodox Christians, and sometimes
referred to as the "Green Patriarch" for his advocacy on behalf of the environment.
Regarding the opinion that humanity has waited too long to act to safeguard the
environment, Bartholomew writes...

It is never too late.  God's world has incredible healing powers; and human choices
can change the tide in global warming.  Within a single generation, we could steer
earth toward our children's future.  With God's blessing and help, that generation
can begin now.  For the first time in the history of our world, we recognize that our
decisions and choices directly impact the environment.  It is up to us to shape our
future; it is up to us to choose our destiny.  Breaking the vicious circle of ecological
degradation is a choice with which we are uniquely endowed at this critical moment
in the history of our planet.
