Walnut Hill Church Weekly Letter

Wednesday, February 27, 2013

Greetings to all!

The notion of a "community" within which we practice our faith is very
much a part of the Christian tradition.  The singular word "disciple" is
seldom found in the gospels, but frequently is found the plural form,
"disciples."  Indeed, the Lord's Prayer begins "Our" Father ... rather than
"My" Father...  The importance of community is not limited to the Christian
tradition.  In the Buddhist tradition, for instance, the word for community
is "sangha." Thich Nhat Hanh reflects on the importance of a sangha.

It is a joy to find ourselves in the midst of a sangha where people
are practicing well together.  Each person's way of walking, eating,
and smiling can be a real help to us.  She is walking for me, I am
smiling for her, and we do this together, as a sangha.  By practicing
together like this, we can expect a real transformation within us. We
don't have to practice intensively or force ourselves.  We just have to
allow ourselves to be in a good sangha where people are happy,
living deeply each moment, and transformation will come naturally,
without much effort.

The principle is to organize in the way that is most enjoyable for
everyone.  You will never find a perfect sangha.  An imperfect
sangha is good enough.  Rather than complain too much about
your sangha, do your best to transform yourself into a good element
of the sangha.  Accept the sangha and build on it.

Greetings to all!

The spring's EOS (Exploring Our Spirituality) season overlaps with Lent.
Whether participating in an EOS activity or pursuing your own personal
lenten practice, the following prayer might be useful...

God, Father and Mother of us all:  We thank you, for you call us to be your
children and surround us with signs of your love.  Open our hearts to your
love and make us aware of the fullness of your peace.
We thank you, God, for placing confidence in us, for challenging us to
freedom, for teaching us not to be afraid, for forgiving us, and showing
us how to forgive others, for calling us to build a community of love.
God, open our hearts to your Spirit dwelling within us, so we might
listen to your call, so we might live a life of service and of love, so we
might help proclaim justice and freedom in our land, so we might accept
more fully your Word, and grasp the mysterious depths of your love.
God, we pray that what we share [in this season] enriches our lives
and allows us to experience your goodness and your glory.  Amen.

Walnut Hill Church Weekly Letter

Wednesday, February 13, 2013

Greetings to all!

Today is Ash Wednesday, the traditional beginning of Lent.
Thomas Long shares an Ash Wednesday experience.

On Ash Wednesday several years ago, one of my friends, a
hospital chaplain, left the hospital shortly before noon and
attended a service at a nearby church.  As a part of the worship,
the minister inscribed on my friend's forehead a cross made of
ashes mingled with oil.  He returned to the hospital, ashes still
in place, and began to visit the patients.  One of the patients
noticed the ashes on his forehead and, thinking it was a smudge
of dirt, grabbed a tissue and said, "Come here, hon, you've gotten
into something."
My friend artfully avoided the tissue and said, "No, they are
ashes.  They're supposed to be there." She looked at him,
puzzled.  He began to talk with her about the meaning of Ash
Wednesday, how the day meant that God was with us when
we were weak and vulnerable, how we were but dust, ashes,
and God was with us, taking us toward Easter even when life
was broken, tragic, and sad.
The woman thought for a moment, and then she said, "I think
I want some of that."  My friend slowly reached to his forehead,
borrowed some of the ashen smudge, and with his finger
traced on her forehead the sign of the cross."
(from Testimony: Talking Ourselves into Being Christian)

Ash Wednesday worship opportunities around town are many
including a service at 6:30pm, at Pax Christi Catholic Church
(corner of Victoria Way and Man-O-War Blvd, just east of
Nicholasville Rd).  This service will bring together traditional
liturgy and contemporary "praise-style" music.

Sunday in Lent:
Deuteronomy 26:1-11
Romans 10:8-13

with the conclusion of our series, "Proof of Heaven."  This
Sunday's conversation will focus around ideas presented by

February 17.  Activities will include a Scout flag ceremony at
10:30am and presentations by scouts during worship.

evenings and Thursday morning.  Use reply email to sign up

Walnut Hill Church Weekly Letter

Wednesday, February 6, 2013

Greetings to all!

This Sunday, February 10, is the Sunday of the Transfiguration
of the Lord.  The story of the Transfiguration always reminds me
of Thomas Merton's vision, which he experienced on 4th Street
in Louisville, in which he saw the people around him in a new
way.  He later reflected on what he had seen...

At the center of our being is a point of nothingness which is
untouched by sin and by illusion, a point of pure truth, a point
or spark which belongs entirely to God ... It is like a pure diamond,
blazing with the invisible light of heaven.  It is in everybody, and
if we could see it we would see these billions of points of light
coming together in the face and blaze of a sun that would make
all the darkness and cruelty of life vanish completely ... I have
no program for this seeing.  It is only given.  But the gate of
heaven is everywhere.
(from "A Member of the Human Race")

The scripture readings for Sunday, Feb 10, the Transfiguration
of the Lord...

10am, in Trinity Hall, with the second of three conversations,

A host(s) is needed for our after worship refreshments this
Sunday, Feb 10.  Use reply email to volunteer for this Sunday,
