Walnut Hill Church Weekly Letter

Wednesday, July 18, 2018

Greetings to all!

I heard this morning that at least some of the lately rescued Thai soccer
players will be engaging in a period of monastic practice as a response to
the prayers, effort, and sacrifice involved in their rescue. I was reminded of
the gospel story of the 10 persons healed by Jesus. As you might recall,
one returned to "thank him" (LK 17).  No doubt, Buddhist traditions differ in
numerous ways from my own. I nonetheless find the notion of seeking to offer
some response for what one has received from others to be a reminder for
me of the call to live a life of "gratitude" for gifts great and small, blessings
seen and unseen.  Through such practices one can embody the words of
Meister Eckhart, "If the only prayer you said was 'thank you,' that would be
enough."

Preaching for the next three Sundays at Walnut Hill Church will be…
*The Rev. Nancy Jo Kemper (July 22)
*The Rev. John Cavendish (July 29)
*The Rev. David Sharrard (Aug 5), Holy Communion
As always, Morning Worship will be at 11am, with nursery care and
faith formation for children and youth, followed by the After Worship
Gathering at Noon.

Sunday Conversations (10am) will be on summer holiday for the next
three Sundays, resuming on Sunday, August 12, 10am.

Sunday Hosts - Thanks to all those who responded so quickly to last
Sunday's invitation to host our Sunday refreshments.  We have filled all
the Sundays through August, with the exception of July 29.  Visit the
online sign-up sheet to volunteer for July 29 or any Sunday in September.
Thanks again to all our willing volunteers!

Nursery Volunteers - Our nursery caregivers will be taking a few Sundays
off, so we are in need of a few volunteers to help staff the nursery over the
next several Sundays.  Contact Lauren if you might be available and willing
to volunteer.  Thanks for your help in extending Walnut Hill hospitality to our
youngest members and their families.

Men's Coffee gatherings are held Saturday mornings, 8am, at Paneras on
Richmond Rd. No formal program, just good conversation regarding all kinds
of topics. Feel free to stop by for as long or short a time as your schedule
permits.  No rsvp required.

Ecumenical News
- One of our local ecumenical partners, Pax Christi Catholic Church
has a new pastor.  Father Patrick Stewart recently began his ministry at
Pax Christi.  We pray blessings upon Father Stewart and the congregation
of Pax Christi as they minister together in the months and years ahead.
-The Kentucky Council of Churches will hold its 2018 Annual
Assembly, Oct 25 - 26, at Jeffersontown, Kentucky.  The title of the 2018
assembly is "A House Divided."  The keynote speaker will be the
Rev Leah Schade.  Preaching will be the Rev. Paul Prather.

Kroger Rewards - Walnut Hill lately received a check in the amount of
$238 from the Kroger Company, the proceeds of the last quarter's
participation by 29 Walnut Hill households in the Kroger Community
Rewards Program.  Thanks to all those who support Walnut Hill by their
participation.

The weekly letter will be on summer holiday for the next two weeks.
Look for the next weekly letter on August 8.

Peace to all.

Mike Ward

Walnut Hill Church Weekly Letter

Wednesday, July 11, 2018

Greetings to all!

The successful rescue of the Thai soccer team and coach will be remembered as
one of the "good news" events of 2018, notwithstanding the death of one of the Thai
rescue divers.  All in all, it is an example of the possibilities of human endurance,
courage, sacrifice, ingenuity, and cooperation. Hopefully, the "rest of the story" of life
will turn out well for those young people and others directly involved. Hopefully, also,
the story will have some "staying power" for a world in which the best of humankind
is often overshadowed by the worst.  For now, as the apostle Paul recommends, let
us simply "rejoice with those who rejoice."

The lectionary texts for July 15, the Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time…

Sunday Conversations … The documentary film regarding the life of Fred Rogers
has been something of a cinematic hit this summer.  We'll explore the possible
reasons for this box office surprise in a conversation titled "Where are you now …
Mr. Rogers?" Join us this Sunday, 10am, in Trinity Hall.

The 7th Annual Walnut Hill Bike Ride was held on (a beautiful) Saturday, July 7.
Over 200 cyclists, walkers, volunteers, and guests attended.  Over $4,000 in cash,
in-kind gifts, and services were received from participants, business sponsors, and
partner organizations to support the work of Kentucky Refugee Ministries. Thanks
to the cyclists and other participants, event planners, volunteers and food providers,
partner organizations (Bluegrass Cycling Club and Kentucky Refugee Ministries),
business sponsors (Crankworks Bicycles, Bicycle Face, Columbia Gas of Kentucky,
DeCamp Talbott Seif psc), and the Lexington Police Department. Special thanks to
Team Cornett for event posters, t-shirts, and media contacts. it was a great day!

Parking Hospitality - Walnut Hill hospitality begins before a member or visitor
enters the building on a Sunday morning, but rather as he/she drives in and finds a
place to park.  The Vestry recently affirmed setting aside some parking spaces near
the Sanctuary for persons who might need to park closer to the building. Watch
for parking signs between the two sidewalks designating these special parking
spaces. Thanks for your help in making Walnut Hill a welcoming place for persons
with mobility challenges.

After Worship Hospitality - Another aspect of Walnut Hill hospitality is our after
worship gathering.  A new sign up sheet for mid-July through September has been
posted in the Sanctuary foyer and in Trinity Hall. Take a moment to visit the sign
up sheet (or visit the online sign-up sheet ) and host a Sunday upcoming.  Thanks
to all our Sunday hosts!

Nathaniel Mission - Walnut Hill lately received the following note from our friends
at the Nathaniel Mission in response to our recent donations toward their summer
camp program.  Dear Walnut Hill Church, I cannot begin to thank you enough for
all of your generous donations! You have made such a difference in the lives of the
kids of Cardinal Valley and Harrison Elementary Schools!  Because of your support,
we have been able to run a successful year of summer camp!  Thank you!
Sincerely, Sierra Bonham (Children & Youth Coordinator)

Bell Tower - You might have noticed some scaffolding around the Bell Tower recently.
The occasion for the scaffolding is some needed structural maintenance on the tower,
which is nearing 20 years of age.  It is anticipated that the work will require a couple
weeks to complete. The cost is being shared between the Cemetery Association
and the Church Memorial Fund.

Peace to all.

Walnut Hill Church Weekly Letter

Tuesday, July 3, 2018

Greetings to all!

July 4 is the Independence Day holiday, which will find many of us at cookouts,
visiting friends/family, lining parade routes, and watching fireworks, to name a
few traditional activities.  in the midst of all the fun, let us not forget to reflect on
the principles and ideals of our nation, even while we are mindful of its flaws.  In
his book, American Gospel, the presidential historian Jon Meacham offers some
thoughts about the Founders' approach to the sometimes tricky relationship of
religion and politics.

The Founders got some things wrong, particularly slavery, but they were on the
mark about much, including religion and politics.  The sound and fury of our own
time could be calmed by grasping what they had to say about the role of faith
in the nation. Respect religion, hear it out, learn from it, then let the work of the
country unfold as the parties to the republican contract - the Constitution - will
have it.  In a letter to Abigail, with advice for his sons, John Adams wrote, "Let
them revere nothing but Religion, Morality, and Liberty" - a useful exhortation
for the nation too.

The lectionary texts for July 8, the 14th Sunday in Ordinary Time…

Sunday Conversations continue this Sunday, July 8, 10am, in Trinity Hall.
Watch the Friday update for information regarding this Sunday's conversation
topic.

The 7th Annual Walnut Hill Bike Ride will be held on Sat, July 7, at Walnut
Hill Church. You can help by providing food for the event, volunteering on the
event day, spreading news of the event via word or social media, and/or attending
as a participant.  Use reply email for more information or visit the Walnut Hill

Parking Hospitality - Walnut Hill hospitality begins before a member or visitor
enters the building on a Sunday morning, but rather as he/she drives in and finds
a place to park.  The Vestry recently affirmed the idea of setting aside some parking
spaces nearest to the Sanctuary for persons who might need to park closer to the
building. Watch for parking signs between the two sidewalks designating these
special parking spaces. Thanks for your help in making Walnut Hill a welcoming
place for persons with mobility challenges.

After Worship Hospitality - Another important aspect of Walnut Hill hospitality
is our after worship gathering.  We have been blessed this spring and early
summer with a wonderful succession of after worship hosts.  A new sign up sheet
has been posted in the Sanctuary foyer and in Trinity Hall for mid-July through
September. Take a moment and visit the sign up sheet (or visit the online sign-up
sheet ) and host a Sunday upcoming.  Thanks to all our Sunday hosts!

Thanks to all those (nearly 70) persons who completed the Walnut Hill Pastor
Review survey during the month of June. Your responses will be gathered and
shared with Mike in conversation with the Vestry, after a which a summary report
will be shared with the congregation.

Happy 4th!
