Walnut Hill Church Weekly Letter

Wednesday, July 11, 2018

Greetings to all!

The successful rescue of the Thai soccer team and coach will be remembered as
one of the "good news" events of 2018, notwithstanding the death of one of the Thai
rescue divers.  All in all, it is an example of the possibilities of human endurance,
courage, sacrifice, ingenuity, and cooperation. Hopefully, the "rest of the story" of life
will turn out well for those young people and others directly involved. Hopefully, also,
the story will have some "staying power" for a world in which the best of humankind
is often overshadowed by the worst.  For now, as the apostle Paul recommends, let
us simply "rejoice with those who rejoice."

The lectionary texts for July 15, the Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time…

Sunday Conversations … The documentary film regarding the life of Fred Rogers
has been something of a cinematic hit this summer.  We'll explore the possible
reasons for this box office surprise in a conversation titled "Where are you now …
Mr. Rogers?" Join us this Sunday, 10am, in Trinity Hall.

The 7th Annual Walnut Hill Bike Ride was held on (a beautiful) Saturday, July 7.
Over 200 cyclists, walkers, volunteers, and guests attended.  Over $4,000 in cash,
in-kind gifts, and services were received from participants, business sponsors, and
partner organizations to support the work of Kentucky Refugee Ministries. Thanks
to the cyclists and other participants, event planners, volunteers and food providers,
partner organizations (Bluegrass Cycling Club and Kentucky Refugee Ministries),
business sponsors (Crankworks Bicycles, Bicycle Face, Columbia Gas of Kentucky,
DeCamp Talbott Seif psc), and the Lexington Police Department. Special thanks to
Team Cornett for event posters, t-shirts, and media contacts. it was a great day!

Parking Hospitality - Walnut Hill hospitality begins before a member or visitor
enters the building on a Sunday morning, but rather as he/she drives in and finds a
place to park.  The Vestry recently affirmed setting aside some parking spaces near
the Sanctuary for persons who might need to park closer to the building. Watch
for parking signs between the two sidewalks designating these special parking
spaces. Thanks for your help in making Walnut Hill a welcoming place for persons
with mobility challenges.

After Worship Hospitality - Another aspect of Walnut Hill hospitality is our after
worship gathering.  A new sign up sheet for mid-July through September has been
posted in the Sanctuary foyer and in Trinity Hall. Take a moment to visit the sign
up sheet (or visit the online sign-up sheet ) and host a Sunday upcoming.  Thanks
to all our Sunday hosts!

Nathaniel Mission - Walnut Hill lately received the following note from our friends
at the Nathaniel Mission in response to our recent donations toward their summer
camp program.  Dear Walnut Hill Church, I cannot begin to thank you enough for
all of your generous donations! You have made such a difference in the lives of the
kids of Cardinal Valley and Harrison Elementary Schools!  Because of your support,
we have been able to run a successful year of summer camp!  Thank you!
Sincerely, Sierra Bonham (Children & Youth Coordinator)

Bell Tower - You might have noticed some scaffolding around the Bell Tower recently.
The occasion for the scaffolding is some needed structural maintenance on the tower,
which is nearing 20 years of age.  It is anticipated that the work will require a couple
weeks to complete. The cost is being shared between the Cemetery Association
and the Church Memorial Fund.

Peace to all.

Mike Ward
