Walnut Hill Church Weekly Letter

Wednesday, August 28, 2013

Greetings to all!

Today is the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington
and Martin Luther King, Jr.'s "I Have a Dream Speech."
Below are the concluding words of the speech.

...let freedom ring from the prodigious hilltops of New
Hampshire.  Let freedom ring from the mighty mountains
of New York.  Let freedom ring from the heightening
Alleghenies of Pennsylvania!  Let freedom ring from the
snowcapped Rockies of Colorado!  Let freedom ring from
the curvaceous slopes of California!  But not only that; let
freedom ring from Stone Mountain of Georgia!  Let freedom
ring from Lookout Mountain of Tennessee!  Let freedom
ring from every hill and molehill of Mississippi.  From
every mountainside, let freedom ring.
And when this happens, when we allow freedom to
ring, when we let it ring from every village and every
hamlet, from every state and every city, we will be able to
speed up that day when all of God's children, black men
and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and
Catholics, will be able to join hands and sing in the words
of the old Negro spiritual, "Free at last!  free at last! thank
God Almighty, we are free at last!"

Jeremiah 2:4-13
Hebrews 13:1-8, 15-16
Luke 14:1, 7-14

The Sacrament of Holy Communion will be administered
this Sunday, September 1.

Men's Coffee - Walnut Hill men are invited to gather for
coffee and conversation each Saturday morning, 8am,
at Paneras on Richmond Road.  Feel free to stop by for as
long or short a time as your schedule allows.  No rsvp
required.

Sunday Conversations continue this Sunday, Sept 1,
10am, in Trinity Hall.  Conversation topics vary from
Sunday to Sunday.  Watch the Friday update for more
details.

Celebrating Service!  Many Walnut Hill folks serve others
through volunteer organizations and agencies in Lexington
and beyond. We would like to celebrate such service.  Persons
currently serving others through an agency or organization are
invited to prepare a simple poster board describing their
service.  These poster boards will be displayed in Trinity Hall
during our Fall Potluck (Sept 15), and the information from them
will gathered into a "service directory."  This is an excellent
opportunity to publicize service organizations and invite others
to support them.

The Fall Potluck is coming on Sunday, Sept 15.  Bring a
salad, side dish, or dessert.  Meat and beverage will be
provided.  We are currently seeking a volunteer(s) to help
coordinate various aspects of the meal.  Use reply email
for more information.

Peace to all.

Sunday at Walnut Hill Church

This Sunday, August 25, at Walnut Hill Church...

Sunday Conversations, 10am, Trinity Hall

Zealot: The Life and Times of Jesus of Nazareth

We will talk about the new book by Reza Aslan.  Aslan, a
Muslim scholar of religions,  presents Jesus in an historical
context.  To quote from the book, "...Jesus the man - is every
bit as compelling, charismatic, and praiseworthy as Jesus
the Christ.  He is, in short, someone worth believing in."
Conversation participants need not have read the book
in advance of our conversation, but they might well find
themselves wanting to read it after.

Morning Worship, 11am, Sanctuary

Sermon - For What Else Are We Born?
Text -  Jeremiah 1:4-10

Nursery care and Sunday School for children.

After Worship Gathering, Noon, Trinity Hall

All are invited to gather for refreshments and fellowship.

Walnut Hill Church Weekly Letter

Wednesday, August 21, 2013

Greetings to all!

During my recent sabbatical I was reminded of the benefit,
and real pleasure, of some time every day devoted to spiritual
reading, reflection, and prayer.  While it might look different
for every person, such daily practice is a vital part of the
spiritual life.  Dorothy Bass comments.

The Christian practice of receiving the day begins with setting
aside a part of each day for attention to God.  This piece of
time leans deliberately into the wind, grounding us to resist
the forces that hurry us on to distraction.  It becomes the
regular setting for seeing the whole day through the lens of
grace ... Monastics offer this time in certain patterns; the
parents of young children offer it (and teach their children to
offer it) in other forms, often at bedtime.  Each practitioner
needs to find this space each day, in a form that fits his or
her rhythms.  Finding it, we may discover ... not only that we
see more clearly but also that we ourselves are being seen.

Reza Aslan.

Directory Photos - This Sunday, August 25, is your last
opportunity to be photographed for our upcoming Walnut
Hill photo directory.  Photographs are taken after worship
in the courtyard between the Sanctuary and Trinity Hall.

A New Roof - Work is underway this week to replace the
shingles on the Sanctuary roof.  The re-shingling will be
followed by the installation of new gutters on the Sanctuary
and Trinity Hall.  The cost of this work is being paid from
the Building Fund, which makes this is a good time to consider
a donation to the Building Fund.  Simply make your check
payable to Walnut Hill Church, designated "Building Fund."
Thanks to all those whose past donations have made this
project possible.

Youth Activities Leader - Walnut Hill is currently seeking
an adult to serve as a Youth Activities Leader for our
Sunday morning and afternoon youth programs.  Please
contact the church office if you know someone who might
be a candidate for this part-time, paid position.

Walnut Hill Church Weekly Letter

Wednesday, August 14, 2013

Greetings to all!

Fayette County schools open today, as will other schools in the
coming days and weeks.  Consider this prayer as found in the
Walnut Hill Church Worship Book.

Almighty God, we beseech Thee with Thy gracious favor to
behold our universities, colleges, and schools, that knowledge
may be increased among us, and all good learning flourish and
abound.  Bless all who teach and all who learn, and grant that
in humility of heart they may ever look unto Thee, who art the
Fountain of all wisdom; through Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen.

Photo Directory - We are in the process of publishing a photo
directory.  If you have not already done so, you may have your
photo taken after worship this Sunday (Aug 18) or next (Aug 25).
Other arrangements can be made to have a photo taken or to
submit your own.  Use reply email for more information.

THANK YOU to all those who, in a variety of ways, made it
possible for me to enjoy these past six weeks of sabbatical and
vacation.  I look forward to sharing some of my experiences
during worship this Sunday, and I look forward to hearing some
of your experiences over these coming days and weeks.  It
has been a good time for me, and I trust it has been a good time
for the congregation as well, and it is good to be back!

Peace,

Mike Ward
