Walnut Hill Church Weekly Letter

Tuesday, December 31, 2013

Greetings to all!

Whether it be a new year or a new day, the future always arrives
with surprises.

Each day (year) holds a surprise.  But only if we expect it can we
see, hear, or feel it when it comes to us.  Let's not be afraid to
receive each day's surprise, whether it comes to us as sorrow
or as joy.  It will open a new place in our hearts, a place where
we can welcome new friends and celebrate more fully our
shared humanity.

Sunday at Walnut Hill Church

This Sunday, December 29, at Walnut Hill Church...

Sunday Conversations, 10am, Trinity Hall

Light in the Darkness

The Gospel of John offers no Christmas story but rather
a poetic reflection on the Word made flesh and light in the
darkness.  We will explore what John might have been
trying to say about Jesus, and how John's understanding
of Jesus compares to our own.

Walnut Hill Church Weekly Letter

Tuesday, December 24, 2013

Greetings to all!

Well Christmas is upon us once again. Consider the following
reading for your Christmas Eve use and reflection.

This, tonight,
is the meeting place
of heaven and earth.

For this, tonight,
is the stable
in which God keeps his appointment
to meet his people.

Not many high are here ,
not many holy;
not many innocent children,
not many worldly wise;
not all familiar faces,
not all frequent visitors.

But if tonight
only strangers met
that would be enough.

For Bethlehem was not the hub of the universe,
nor was the stable a platform for famous folk.

In an out-of-the-way place
which folk never thought to visit -
there God kept and keeps his promise;
there God sends the Beloved One.

(adapted from Cloth for the Cradle)

Walnut Hill Church Weekly Letter

Wednesday, December 18, 2013

Greetings to all!

The time draws near to celebrate the birth of Jesus, an event as well
known as any, yet shrouded in mystery.  Consider the following thoughts
by Frederick Buechner.

Who knows what the facts of Jesus' birth actually were?  As for myself,
the longer I live, the more inclined I am to believe in miracle, the more
I suspect that if we had been there at the birth, we might well have
seen and heard things that would be hard to reconcile with modern
science.  But of course that is not the point, because the Gospel
writers are not really interested primarily in the facts of the birth but
in the significance, the meaning for them of that birth just as the
people who love us are not really interested primarily in the facts of
our birth but in what it meant to them when we were born and how
for them the world was never the same again, how their whole lives
were charged with new significance.  Whether there were ten million
angels there or just the woman herself and her husband, when that
child was born the whole course of history was changed.  That is a
fact as hard and blunt as any fact.  Art, music, literature, our culture
itself, our political institutions, our whole understanding of ourselves
and our world - it is impossible to conceive of how differently the
world would have developed if that child had not been born.  And
in terms of faith, much more must be said because for faith, the birth
of the child into the darkness of the world made possible not just a
new way of understanding life but a new way of living life.

Walnut Hill Church Weekly Letter

Wednesday, December 11, 2013

Greetings to all!

In theological language, Christmas is about Incarnation, God in the flesh dwelling
among us.  Kathleen Norris reflects on the notion of Incarnation as expressed in
the conversation between the angel Gabriel and the young woman Mary announcing
the birth to come, particularly the explanation of the event:  "The power of the Most
High will overshadow you; therefore the child will be called Son of God."

The angel's "therefore" seems alarmingly significant, the seed of what Christian
theologians have for well over a thousand years termed the scandal of the
Incarnation.  It also resonates with my own life.  When a place or time seems
touched by God, it is an overshadowing , a sudden eclipsing of my priorities and
plans. But even in terrible circumstances and calamities, in matters of life and
death, if I sense that I am in the shadow of God, I find light , so much light that my
vision improves dramatically.  I know that holiness is near.

Walnut Hill Church Weekly Letter

Wednesday, December 4, 2013

Greetings to all!

This past Sunday we entered into the season of Advent, four weeks
of reflection, preparation, and waiting for the advent (coming) of God
into the world, into our lives.  Among the traditional Advent themes
is the admonition to watch and be alert.  Ann Weems picks up this
theme in her poem, "To Listen, To Look."

Is it all sewn up - my life?
Is it at this point so predictable,
so orderly,
so neat,
so arranged,
so right,
that I don't have time or space
for listening for the rustle of angels' wings
or running to stables to see a baby?
Could this be what he meant when he said
Listen, those who have ears to hear...
Look, those who have eyes to see?
O God, give me the humbleness of those shepherds
who saw in the cold December darkness
the Coming of Light
the Advent of Love!

Tuesday, November 26, 2013

Greetings to all!

On this Tuesday* before Thanksgiving we might do well to reflect on a
portion of President Washington's first Thanksgiving Day proclamation.

Now therefore I do recommend and assign Thursday, the 26th day
of November next, to be devoted by the people of these States to
the service of that great and glorious Being who is the beneficent
author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be; that we may
then all unite in rendering unto Him our sincere and humble thanks
for His kind care and protection of the people of this country previous
to their becoming a nation; for the signal and manifold mercies and
the favorable interpositions of His providence in the course and
conclusion of the late war; for the great degree of tranquility, union,
and plenty which we have since enjoyed; for the peaceable and
rational manner in which we have been able to establish
constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and
particularly the national one now lately instituted for the civil and
religious liberty with which we are blessed, and the means we have
of acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge; and, in general, for
all the great and various favors which He has been pleased to
confer upon us.

Walnut Hill Church Weekly Letter

Wednesday, November 20, 2013

Greetings to all!

This Sunday, Nov 24, is the final Sunday of the church year, the
Sunday of Christ the King.  The following Sunday, Dec 1, begins
a new year with the 1st Sunday of Advent.

Jesus spent significant time and energy talking about and
demonstrating life in the Kingdom of God.  It is little wonder that in
the memory and imagination of the church, Jesus came to be
thought of as "King."

Whether or not Jesus would have chosen, or even accepted, the
title of "King," to think of him in such terms invites us to imagine the
sort of "kingdom" he might promote including justice, compassion,
and mercy.  To claim Jesus as our "King" is to commit ourselves
to a way of living in this world whereby his kingdom can be
glimpsed in both our personal and public lives.

The scripture lessons for Nov 24, the Sunday of Christ the King...
Jeremiah 23:1-6
Colossians 1:11-20
Luke 23:33-43

Sunday Conversations continue this Sunday, Nov 24, 10am,
in Trinity Hall. In anticipation of the Thanksgiving holiday, our
conversation will spring from the question, "What are we really
thankful for?"

Children's Choir:  Children through elementary age are invited
to gather this Sunday, Nov 24, 10am, in Trinity Hall for music
and singing in anticipation of their Christmas season presentation
on Sunday morning, Dec 8.

Youth (middle and high school) are invited to gather at Walnut
Hill this Sunday, Nov 24, 5:30pm, for activities and a meal
together.

Walnut Hill Church Weekly Letter

Wednesday, November 13, 2013

Greetings to all!

Our EOS* series concludes this Sunday as we focus on the notion of
"compassion." Thomas Merton included compassion among a short list of
practices for what he then perceived to be a critical moment in human history,
namely the "cold war" threat of nuclear destruction.  Might Merton's short
list of practices still have application today?

1. Preeminence of meditation and prayer, of self-emptying, cleaning out,
getting rid of the self that blocks the view of the truth.  The self that says
it will be here and then that it will not be here.
2. Preeminence of compassion for every living thing, for life, for the
defenseless and simple beings, for the human race in its blindness..
3. Weariness of words, except in friendship, in the simplest and most
direct kind of communication, by word of mouth or letter.
4. Preeminence of the silent and conclusive action - if any presents
itself - of meaningful suffering, accepted in complete silence, without
justification.

(from The Intimate Merton)

Sunday Conversations continue this Sunday, Nov 17, with discussion
of the "Charter for Compassion" as proposed by the well-known author

Children's Choir:  Walnut Hill children (through elementary age) are
invited to gather each Sunday morning, 10am, in Trinity Hall for music
and singing as they prepare for their Christmas presentation on Dec. 8.

As an EOS* practice for this week consider the practice of "deep listening."
Moving beyond hearing  to listening  requires that a person let go of "usual
assumptions and listen with respect for precisely what is being said."
Visit "Deep Listening" for ideas on how to cultivate one's capacity to listen.

Philippine Relief:  At its meeting last Sunday, the Walnut Hill Vestry
approved a $250 gift from the Community Fund in support of relief
efforts in the wake of Typhoon Hayian.  Walnut Hill's gift will be sent via
Church World Service.  Persons attending worship this coming Sunday,
Nov 17, may add to this gift through donations of cash or checks (payable
to Walnut Hill Church).  For information related to Church World Service's
efforts, visit Church World Service .

Walnut Hill Church Weekly Letter

Wednesday, November 6, 2013

Greetings to all!

"Conversion" is one of those words in our religious vocabulary with
which we are not as comfortable today as in past generations; yet,
conversion might still have a role in our spiritual journey.  Consider
these thoughts from Orthodox theologian Paul Evdokimov.

With rare exceptions, the spiritual life comes into being in an event
that is called "conversion" ....Something we have read, an encounter,
a reflection, causes a light to break forth suddenly, brilliantly.  In its
brightness, all is seen in its true order as in an inspired poem that
gives everything a new and inestimable value, as in the music of
Mozart.  It is a religious springtime, full of joy and enthusiasm. Like
the buds filled with sap, the human being feels uplifted in a
surprising joy and a spontaneous sympathy for everything and
everyone.  This is an unforgettable time.  Like a feast illumined by
a thousand lights, it makes one see God, the smiling countenance
of the Father, coming to meet his child.

Walnut Hill Church Weekly Letter

Wednesday, October 30, 2013

Greetings to all!

We will observe "All Saints' Day" this Sunday, November 3.  In one of his journal
entries, Thomas Merton describes those "saints" who particularly move him,
and in the process offers a description of what makes for a saint in any time.

The saints of the 15th century are among those who most move me.  In the
collapse of medieval society, corruption of the clergy, decadence of conventual
life, there emerge men and women of the laity supremely obedient to God ...
Complete and simple signs of contradiction to worldliness and system and
convention and prejudiced interest.  Not rebels at all, but completely meek and
submissive instruments of God.  In them you see clearly and movingly revealed
what it is not to be a mere rebel but to be obedient to God as a sign to men,
a sign of mercy, a revelation of truth and of power.  I am drawn to these "signs"
of God with all the love of my heart, trusting above all in their love and their
intercession, for they live in the glory of God.
(from The Intimate Merton)

Sunday Conversations continue this Sunday, Nov 3, with a conversation
bringing together our EOS* season and All Saints' Day, as we find among the
saints some examples of contemplative living.

As an EOS* practice this week, explore how your work (paid or volunteer,
at home or in public) can be spiritual practice by doing work "carefully and well,
with love and respect for the nature of the task and with due attention to its
purpose." (Merton)  This week, offer your work as worship.  For more
information regarding this and other spiritual practices, visit The Tree .

Walnut Hill Church Weekly Letter

Wednesday, October 22, 2013

Greetings to all!

As we move through the EOS* season, we are invited to consider the difference
between "knowing about God" and "knowing God." In the one, God is the object
of our inquiry; in the other, God is the ground of our being.  Thomas Merton
distinguishes between these two types of "knowing."

The knowledge of which we are capable is simply knowledge about God.  It points
to God in analogies, which we must transcend in order to reach him.  But we must
transcend ourselves as well as our analogies, and in seeking to know God we must
forget the familiar subject-object relationship that characterizes our ordinary acts of
knowing...
[The aim]...is not arrive at an objective and apparently "scientific" knowledge about
God, but to come to know God through the realization that our very being is penetrated
with God's knowledge and love for us.
(adapted from Contemplative Prayer)

Walnut Hill Church Weekly Letter

Wednesday, October 16, 2013

Greetings to all!

This week's EOS* reflection invites us to consider life's questions and
answers.  The questions, which often concern matters of life purpose,
meaning, and destiny, occur to us at various times.  The answers can be
elusive, and we sometimes settle for solutions that are popular or
well-packaged. Consider these thoughts regarding the solutions to life's
questions.

The true solutions are not those that we force upon life in accordance
with our theories, but those which life itself provides for those who dispose
themselves to receive the truth.  Consequently, our task is to dissociate
ourselves from all who have theories which promise clear and infallible
solutions, and to mistrust all such theories, not in a spirit of negativism
and defeat, but rather trusting life itself, and nature, and if you will permit me,
God above all.  For since man has decided to occupy the place of God he
has shown himself to be by far the blindest, and cruelest, and pettiest,
and most ridiculous of all the false gods.
(Thomas Merton from Raids on the Unspeakable)

As an EOS practice this week try a "Loving-Kindness Meditation," a practice
intended to nurture compassion toward one's self and others.  A description of
this practice can be found at "Loving Kindness Meditation"  .  Feel free to
adapt the practice to your own situation.

Walnut Hill Church Weekly Letter

Wednesday, October 9, 2013

Greetings to all!

This week we enter a season of Exploring Our Spirituality (EOS).
Small group gatherings began earlier this week, and our Sunday
morning conversations and worship will provide opportunity to reflect
on this fall's EOS theme, "Entering the School of Your Experience."
You are invited to engage this season in whatever way makes sense
for you including small group participation, Sunday morning attendance,
personal reading and reflection, or simply living with eyes, ears, and
heart open.  We begin our exploration with a description of
"contemplative living."

Contemplative living is a journey through experience in response to
a "word" heard within our inmost hearts to come out of the spiritual
immaturity of self-centeredness into the fulness of being alive in
community.  Contemplative living is a way of praying through our
life's experiences in a way that manifests our appreciation of the
adventure and gift of being alive.  To live contemplatively is to
commit ourselves to a lifelong extension course in wisdom whereby
we learn the heights and the depths of what it means to become
more joy-filled, courageous, and compassionate human beings.

The scripture lessons for Sunday, October 13...
Mark 1:16-39
Mark 4:1-9

Sunday Conversations pick up the EOS theme this week as we
explore the "Tree of Contemplative Practices."  If you would like
to do a little tree climbing ahead of time, visit "The Tree" .  Join us
this Sunday, 10am, in Trinity Hall.

EOS Sharing Groups:  It is not too late to join an EOS sharing group.
Groups will be meeting for the next five weeks on Sunday evening,
Monday morning, and Monday evening.  Use reply email to inquire
about joining an EOS sharing group.

As an EOS practice this week take a walk(s) in your neighborhood
or a nearby park, or simply sit outside for a while.  Your walk can be
on your own or with someone. Rather than talking, listening to an I-pod,
etc, simply be aware of the sights, sounds, etc, along the way.  At the
end of your walk, reflect and/or talk about what you saw, heard,
experienced, etc.

CWS Hygiene Kits:  At the end of October, Walnut Hill Youth will
be assembling Church World Service Hygiene Kits, which are
distributed around the world in the aftermath of disasters.  Hygiene Kits

starting point for our "Ecumenical Sunday" observance:

We, the members of Walnut Hill Church, an Ecumenical Church...
do hereby organize for the purpose of providing public worship,
the apostolic ministry of word and sacrament, religious instruction,
pastoral care and counseling and in general a witness to the
community of the need for life and work in the name of Jesus...

We, as a church, are a fellowship of believers who wish to bring
together all men and women as children of God and do not wish
to make an obstacle in creed and dogma to fellowship with God's
people. We believe that the true basis of Christian fellowship is love,
which is greater than all our differences and without this love we
have no claim to Christian fellowship.

The Rt. Rev. Douglas Hahn, Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese
of Lexington, will be our special guest for Ecumenical Sunday.
Bishop Hahn will visit informally with us for our 10am Sunday
Conversation.  He will present the sermon during the 11am
worship hour and preside at the Sacrament of Holy Communion.

Youth (middle and high school) and their families are invited to
a fall afternoon At The Cabin (hosted by Derek Vaughan) this
Sunday (Oct 6) including hiking, pumpkin carving, a cookout and
more.  We will leave from Walnut Hill after morning worship.  Activities
will conclude by 4pm.  Use reply email or call the church office to
