Walnut Hill Church Weekly Letter

Wednesday, August 21, 2013

Greetings to all!

During my recent sabbatical I was reminded of the benefit,
and real pleasure, of some time every day devoted to spiritual
reading, reflection, and prayer.  While it might look different
for every person, such daily practice is a vital part of the
spiritual life.  Dorothy Bass comments.

The Christian practice of receiving the day begins with setting
aside a part of each day for attention to God.  This piece of
time leans deliberately into the wind, grounding us to resist
the forces that hurry us on to distraction.  It becomes the
regular setting for seeing the whole day through the lens of
grace ... Monastics offer this time in certain patterns; the
parents of young children offer it (and teach their children to
offer it) in other forms, often at bedtime.  Each practitioner
needs to find this space each day, in a form that fits his or
her rhythms.  Finding it, we may discover ... not only that we
see more clearly but also that we ourselves are being seen.

The scripture lessons for Sunday, August 25...
Jeremiah 1:4-10
Hebrews 12:18-29
Luke 13:10-17

Sunday Conversations continue this Sunday, August 25.
Our conversation focus will be an introduction to the new
book, Zealot: The Life and Times of Jesus of Nazareth, by
Reza Aslan.

Directory Photos - This Sunday, August 25, is your last
opportunity to be photographed for our upcoming Walnut
Hill photo directory.  Photographs are taken after worship
in the courtyard between the Sanctuary and Trinity Hall.

A New Roof - Work is underway this week to replace the
shingles on the Sanctuary roof.  The re-shingling will be
followed by the installation of new gutters on the Sanctuary
and Trinity Hall.  The cost of this work is being paid from
the Building Fund, which makes this is a good time to consider
a donation to the Building Fund.  Simply make your check
payable to Walnut Hill Church, designated "Building Fund."
Thanks to all those whose past donations have made this
project possible.

Youth Activities Leader - Walnut Hill is currently seeking
an adult to serve as a Youth Activities Leader for our
Sunday morning and afternoon youth programs.  Please
contact the church office if you know someone who might
be a candidate for this part-time, paid position.

Celebrating Service!  Many Walnut Hill folks serve others
through organizations and agencies in Lexington and beyond.
We would like to celebrate such service.  Use reply email to let
us know if you, or someone you know, has a story of service to
share.

Peace to all.

Mike Ward
