Walnut Hill Church Weekly Letter

Tuesday, July 3, 2018

Greetings to all!

July 4 is the Independence Day holiday, which will find many of us at cookouts,
visiting friends/family, lining parade routes, and watching fireworks, to name a
few traditional activities.  in the midst of all the fun, let us not forget to reflect on
the principles and ideals of our nation, even while we are mindful of its flaws.  In
his book, American Gospel, the presidential historian Jon Meacham offers some
thoughts about the Founders' approach to the sometimes tricky relationship of
religion and politics.

The Founders got some things wrong, particularly slavery, but they were on the
mark about much, including religion and politics.  The sound and fury of our own
time could be calmed by grasping what they had to say about the role of faith
in the nation. Respect religion, hear it out, learn from it, then let the work of the
country unfold as the parties to the republican contract - the Constitution - will
have it.  In a letter to Abigail, with advice for his sons, John Adams wrote, "Let
them revere nothing but Religion, Morality, and Liberty" - a useful exhortation
for the nation too.

The lectionary texts for July 8, the 14th Sunday in Ordinary Time…

Sunday Conversations continue this Sunday, July 8, 10am, in Trinity Hall.
Watch the Friday update for information regarding this Sunday's conversation
topic.

The 7th Annual Walnut Hill Bike Ride will be held on Sat, July 7, at Walnut
Hill Church. You can help by providing food for the event, volunteering on the
event day, spreading news of the event via word or social media, and/or attending
as a participant.  Use reply email for more information or visit the Walnut Hill

Parking Hospitality - Walnut Hill hospitality begins before a member or visitor
enters the building on a Sunday morning, but rather as he/she drives in and finds
a place to park.  The Vestry recently affirmed the idea of setting aside some parking
spaces nearest to the Sanctuary for persons who might need to park closer to the
building. Watch for parking signs between the two sidewalks designating these
special parking spaces. Thanks for your help in making Walnut Hill a welcoming
place for persons with mobility challenges.

After Worship Hospitality - Another important aspect of Walnut Hill hospitality
is our after worship gathering.  We have been blessed this spring and early
summer with a wonderful succession of after worship hosts.  A new sign up sheet
has been posted in the Sanctuary foyer and in Trinity Hall for mid-July through
September. Take a moment and visit the sign up sheet (or visit the online sign-up
sheet ) and host a Sunday upcoming.  Thanks to all our Sunday hosts!

Thanks to all those (nearly 70) persons who completed the Walnut Hill Pastor
Review survey during the month of June. Your responses will be gathered and
shared with Mike in conversation with the Vestry, after a which a summary report
will be shared with the congregation.

Happy 4th!

Mike Ward
