Walnut Hill Church Weekly Letter

Wednesday, February 6, 2013

Greetings to all!

This Sunday, February 10, is the Sunday of the Transfiguration
of the Lord.  The story of the Transfiguration always reminds me
of Thomas Merton's vision, which he experienced on 4th Street
in Louisville, in which he saw the people around him in a new
way.  He later reflected on what he had seen...

At the center of our being is a point of nothingness which is
untouched by sin and by illusion, a point of pure truth, a point
or spark which belongs entirely to God ... It is like a pure diamond,
blazing with the invisible light of heaven.  It is in everybody, and
if we could see it we would see these billions of points of light
coming together in the face and blaze of a sun that would make
all the darkness and cruelty of life vanish completely ... I have
no program for this seeing.  It is only given.  But the gate of
heaven is everywhere.
(from "A Member of the Human Race")

The scripture readings for Sunday, Feb 10, the Transfiguration
of the Lord...
Exodus 34:29-35
2 Corinthians 3:12 - 4:2
Luke 9:28 - 36

Sunday Conversations continue this Sunday, February 10,
10am, in Trinity Hall, with the second of three conversations,
"Proof of Heaven," prompted by the book of the same title.  Our
focus this Sunday will be biblical witnesses regarding life after death.

A host(s) is needed for our after worship refreshments this
Sunday, Feb 10.  Use reply email to volunteer for this Sunday,
or check the sign up sheet in the Sanctuary foyer to host a
Sunday later in the winter or spring.

Youth (middle & high school) are invited to gather for a meal and
activities this Sunday, Feb 10, 5:30pm.

Exporing Our Spirituality (EOS) small group registration is ongoing.
EOS small groups provide opportunity for faith sharing around this
season's EOS theme, "Discipleship."  Evening and daytime options
are available.  Use reply email to register or request more information.

Thanks to the Walnut Hill youth, parents, soup chefs, and
generous participants for a delicious and successful "Soup-er
Bowl Sunday."  The soup was abundant and so too were the
donations, $282 to support God's Pantry.

In the Community - Walnut Hill members and friends are invited
to an Ash Wednesday service on Wednesday, Feb 13, 6:30pm, at
Pax Christi Catholic Church.

Peace to all.

Mike Ward
