Walnut Hill Church Weekly Letter

Wednesday, May 2, 2012

Greetings to all!

Friday, May 4, is "May Friendship Day,"  one of several annual observances
supported by the ecumenical organization Church Women United.  In
addition to the important goal of nurturing a spirit of friendship across the
boundaries of race, creed, or country, the day provides an opportunity to
reflect on our ordinary friendships, and the attention they both offer to and
require of us.  Consider this poem, "A Time to Talk," by Robert Frost.

When a friend calls to me from the road
And slows his horse to a meaning walk,
I don't stand still and look around
On all the hills I haven't hoed,
And shout from where I am, "What is it?"
No, not as there is a time to talk.
I thrust my hoe in the mellow ground,
Blade-end up and five feet tall,
And plod:  I go up to the stone wall
For a friendly visit.

The sacrament of Holy Communion.

Sunday Conversations continue this Sunday, May 6, 10am, in Trinity Hall.
We will expand from last week's conversation on Psalm 23 as we consider the
possibilities and perils of "Praying the Psalms," based on an article of the same
title by Lawrence Cunningham.  If you would like to check out the article ahead

A host(s) is needed for our after worship refreshments this Sunday, May 6.
Remember that after worship refreshments need not be elaborate, just something
simple to gather around as we enjoy fellowship and conversation.  Use reply
email to volunteer for this Sunday, or check the sign up sheet in the Sanctuary
foyer to host a Sunday later in the spring/summer.

Children are invited to gather for music and singing at 10am this Sunday,
May 6.  Look/listen for the children in the Children's Chapel or Trinity Hall,
depending on the weather.  The children are preparing to present a song
during morning worship on Mother's Day.

Walnut Hill Hospitaltiy: A Cookbook - Plans are in the works for a Walnut Hill
cookbook featuring dishes that we have shared together on occasions such as
seasonal potlucks, Souper Bowl Sunday, and our regular after worship gatherings.
Bring your recipe (including title, your name, ingredients, and directions) to
Walnut Hill any Sunday over the next several weeks.   Publication is expected in
time for 2012 holiday gift giving.

Sandwich Ministry - A new sign up sheet has been posted in the Sanctuary foyer
listing opportunities to serve as Walnut Hill's monthly Sandwich Ministers at the
Lexington Community Inn.  A description of the Sandwich Ministry is posted next to
the sign up sheet.

Men's Coffee - Walnut Hill men are invited to gather for coffee each Saturday
morning, 8am, at Paneras on Richmond Road.  Feel free to drop in for as long or
short a time as your schedule allows.  No rsvp required.

In the Community: Temple Adath Israel and Central Baptist Church present
"A Jewish/Baptist Interfaith Comedy Hour" on Sunday, May 6, 5:30pm, at Central
Baptist Church (110 Wilson Downing Road, across from Fayette Mall).  Suggested
contribution is $18/per person.  Proceeds benefit God's Pantry, Faith Feeds, and
a Nation of Nations.   For more information visit  www.lexcentral.com .

Thanks to all those who made last Sunday's Spring Potluck a great occasion,
including those who helped with various details of the meal and clean-up, those
who brought delicious dishes, and those who shared the feast!

Peace to all.

Mike Ward
