Walnut Hill Church Weekly Letter

Wednesday, May 23, 2012

Greetings to all!

This Sunday, May 27, is the Day of Pentecost, one of several annual
festivals of the Church.  Pentecost focuses on the outpouring, work,
and person of the Holy Spirit.  In her book, Receiving the Day
Dorothy Bass provides some background and context for our
understanding and observance of Pentecost.

For fifty days, it is Easter - more days, probably, than most of us can
sustain our joy.  Like the disciples after they watched the Risen One
ascend on the fortieth day, we have returned to the city, to carry on
with our lives (Acts 1).  It is here that the gift that completes Easter finds
us on the Day of Pentecost.  The Holy Spirit arrives like a rushing wind
(Acts 2), and we understand that the love and strength of God are not
separate from us but now dwell in our own hearts.  Our lives are meant
to embody these gifts of the Spirit and to share them with others.

Sharing The Spirit's Gifts - Pentecost Sunday (May 27) provides
an occasion during worship (11am) to consider and celebrate the
opportunities we have to share the gifts of the Spirit here at Walnut
Hill. Join us for this celebration of the presence and work of the Holy
Spirit in our midst!

The scripture lessons for Sunday, May 27, the Day of Pentecost:
   Acts 2:1-21
   1 Corinthians 12:4-11

Sunday Conversations continue this Sunday, May 27, 10am, in
Trinity Hall, as we reflect on Memorial Day through poetry, ancient
and modern.  Come enjoy a cup of coffee, join the conversation, or
just listen in.

Hope Center Hospitality - We are currently receiving travel/trial size
toiletry items to share with guests at the Hope Center in Lexington.
Place your donations in the collection box located in the Sanctuary
foyer.

Walnut Hill "Pancake Ride" - Walnut Hill is cooperating with the
Bluegrass Cycling Club to host the "Walnut Hill Pancake Ride" on
Saturday, July 14.  We will need several volunteers to prepare a pancake
breakfast and provide hospitality to our cycling guests.  Use reply email if
you would like information on how you might help.

Midsummer Evenings Together - Plans are in process for a series of
three Wednesday evenings in July (11, 18, 25) to gather for a meal and
activities.  Mark the dates on your calendar now, and share with us any
ideas you might have for a topic/book/Bible study over those three
evenings.  You can use reply email to share your ideas.

In the Community:  "Faith in Action: Elder Outreach" is seeking
volunteers to work with elders in the Lexington area to provide occasional
transportation, visits/phone calls, pet/yard help, caregiver respite, etc.
Volunteers are matched with elders based on their time availability and
volunteer interests.  For more information, contact F.I.A. at 252-1365.

Peace to all.

Mike Ward
