Walnut Hill Church Weekly Letter

Wednesday, July 6, 2016

Greetings to all!

Elie Wiesel, Holocaust survivor, writer, and advocate/activist for human dignity and
human rights, died on July 2.  His voice lives on…

Human suffering anywhere concerns men and women everywhere…As long as one
dissident is in prison, our freedom will not be true.  As long as one child is hungry, our
life will be filled with anguish and shame. What all these victims need above all is to
know that they are not alone; that we are not forgetting them, that when their voices
are stifled we shall lend them ours, that while their freedom depends on ours, the
quality of our freedom depends on theirs…We know that every moment is a moment
of grace, every hour an offering; not to share them would mean to betray them.  Our
lives no longer belong to us alone; they belong to all who need us desperately.

The scripture lessons for Sunday, July 10…
Amos 7:7-17
Colossians 1:1-14
Luke 10:25-37

Sunday Conversations continue this Sunday, July 10, 10am, in  Trinity Hall. Our
focus for this Sunday will be the New Testament character, Mary Magdalene, and the
traditions surrounding her.  Come enjoy a cup of coffee, join the conversation, or just
listen in.

The Walnut Hill Bike Ride is coming on Saturday, July 16.  This is an annual
event offering hospitality for cyclists of all ages and skill levels while raising money
to provide commuter bikes for refugee families.  Rides of various lengths, as well
as a "family fun ride" on Walnut Hill Rd, will be available.  Helmets are required
for all cyclists.  Come and enjoy the ride and/or serve as a hospitality volunteer.
Use reply email to request more information or to volunteer.

Summer Hospitality - Hosts are needed for our after worship refreshments for summer
Sundays upcoming, including July 10.  Visit the online sign up sheet, or check the
sign up sheet in the Sanctuary foyer, to host a Sunday this summer.  Thanks to all
our hosts.

Hope Center - As you prepare for summer travel, keep in mind that Walnut Hill is
collecting "travel size" toiletry items for our neighbors at the Hope Center. Look for
the collection box in the Sanctuary foyer.

Thanks to all who contributed to relief efforts on behalf of those affected by recent
flooding in West Virginia.  Walnut Hill will be sending $480 to the area via one of
our ecumenical partners, Presbyterian Disaster Assistance

In the Community: Sara Johnston, a Walnut Hill member and attorney, is hosting
a seminar focusing on planning for "long term care" to be held at the Central Library
on Thu, July 21, 4pm - 5pm.  This program will be of interest to senior adults as well
as their adult children to plan for the possible need of long term care. The program
is free to public. Seating is limited.  For more information or to reserve a seat, contact

Peace to all.
