Walnut Hill Church Weekly Letter

Wednesday, July 5, 2017

Greetings to all!

In The Book of Joy Douglas Abrams chronicles a week-long conversation
with and between Archbishop Desmond Tutu and His Holiness the Dalai
Lama, including the connection between joy and suffering, both our own
and the suffering of others.

In short, the more we heal our own pain, the more we can turn to the pain
of others.  But in a surprising way, what the Archbishop and the Dalai Lama
were saying is that the way we heal our own pain is actually by turning to the
pain of others.  It is a virtuous cycle.  The more we turn toward others, the
more joy we experience, and the more joy we experience, the more we can
bring joy to others.  The goal is not just to create joy for ourselves but, as the
Archbishop poetically phrased it, "to be a reservoir of joy, an oasis of peace,
a pool of serenity that can ripple out to all those around you."  As we will see,
joy is in fact quite contagious.  As is love, compassion, and generosity.

this summer, don't forget that we are collecting travel size toiletry items
(bar soap, shampoo, toothpaste, etc) for the Hope Center.  Place your
items in the collection box in the Sanctuary foyer.

Supporting Walnut Hill Church - Conversation is currently ongoing
regarding making it possible for Walnut Hill members and friends to
support the church with credit card donations via the Walnut Hill Church
website.  Your thoughts, questions, ideas and concerns (via reply email)
would be welcome.
