Walnut Hill Church Weekly Letter

Wednesday, July 19, 2017

Greetings to all!

For many persons summer travel includes places where they "used to live,"
perhaps in their childhood. Such visits are often filled with memories, happy
and/or sad. In his autobiography, Born to Run, Bruce Springsteen recalls a
visit to his hometown, Freehold, New Jersey, including St. Rose's, the
neighborhood Catholic parish…

Once again in the shadow of the steeple, as I stood feeling the old soul of
my tree, of my town weighing upon me, the words and a benediction came
back over me. I'd chanted them singsong, unthinkingly, endlessly in the green
blazer, ivory shirt and green tie of all of St. Rose's unwilling disciples. Tonight
they came to me and flowed differently. Our father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is
in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses as
we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil … all of us, forever and ever, amen.

Summer Music Essays, Part II - Visit "Music Time Travels…" for an essay
from our Organist/Music Director, Angela Hurley, exploring how sacred music
enables the worshiper to travel in time and space.  It's a fascinating journey.
Copies of Dr. Hurley's essay will be available this Sunday in the Sanctuary
foyer.

Sunday Conversations continue this Sunday, July 23, 10am, in Trinity Hall.
Join us as we begin a three-Sunday conversation around the teachings of
Jesus as found in the "Sermon on the Mount" (Matthew 5 - 7).  For a different
way of reading/hearing these familiar words, visit  The Sermon on the Mount .

A Salvation Army "LemonAid" Stand will be part of our after worship
gathering this Sunday, July 23.  Come enjoy a cup of tasty lemonade while
enjoying some after worship refreshments.  All donations will benefit the
Salvation Army's work with neighbors in need.  For more information,
visit LemonAid Days .

South Sudan - We are currently exploring ways that Walnut Hill might connect
with and support ongoing work in the nation of South Sudan. Two possibilities
present themselves: Water for South Sudan  and  The Buckeye Health Clinic .
Visit these two links, and let us know your thoughts.

The 6th Annual Walnut Hill Bike Ride was held this past Saturday, July 15.
More than 150 persons enjoyed a morning of Walnut Hill hospitality. More than
$4,000 was raised to provide bicycles and other support for refugee families.
THANKS to all who made the day a great success including the planning team,
event volunteers, food donors, and, of course, cyclists and other visitors. Thanks
also to our partner organizations, the Bluegrass Cycling Club and Kentucky
Refugee Ministries, as well as our local business sponsors including Columbia
Gas of KY, Community Trust Bank, DeCamp Talbott Seif psc, Chesapeake Farm,
Kerr Brothers Funeral Home and Crankworks Bicycles.  Special thanks to Team
Cornett for their generosity, support and expertise regarding publicity and media.

Peace to all!

Mike Ward
