Walnut Hill Church Weekly Letter

Wednesday, June 22, 2011

Greetings to all!

Recent events and visits by U.S. dignitaries have focused attention on the continent of Africa, a land with deep
religious traditions, many of which spring from the land itself.  Consider this traditional "African Canticle."

All you big things, bless the Lord.
Mount Kilimanjaro and Lake Victoria,
The Rift Valley and the Serengeti Plain,
Fat baobabs and shady mango trees,
All eucalyptis and tamarind trees,
Bless the Lord.
Praise and extol Him for ever and ever.

All you tiny things, bless the Lord.
Busy black ants and hopping fleas,
Wriggling tadpoles and mosquito larvae,
Flying locusts and tsetse flies,
Millet seeds and dried dagaa,
Bless the Lord.
Praise and extol Him for ever and ever.

The Scripture lessons for Sunday, June 26:
Genesis 22:1-14
Romans 6:12-23
Matthew 10:40-42

Making a Difference in the Real World  is the title of three Wednesday evening gatherings, June 8, 15, and 22, 6pm.
Each evening includes a fellowship meal and a service program.  This week's meal is a cookout (provided). Our
program this week focuses on service in the world, with particular attention to Church World Service and the assembling
of emergency school kits.  For all ages!  Rsvp via reply email or telephone to the church office (263-5304).

Men's Coffee - Walnut Hill men are invited to gather for coffee each Saturday morning, 8am, at Paneras on Richmond
Road.  Feel free to stop in for as long or short a time as your schedule permits.  No rsvp required.

Sunday Conversations continue this Sunday, June 26, 10am, in Trinity Hall.  Sunday Conversations include a wide
variety of topics from week to week.  Come enjoy a cup of coffee, join the conversation, or just listen in.  Nursery care is
provided.

The Big Blue Barrel has been placed in Trinity Hall to receive your contributions of non-perishable food items.  When
the barrel is full, the folks from God's Pantry will pick it up and distribute the contents throughout central and eastern
Kentucky.  You might want to bring an item from your pantry each Sunday, or bring a bag full all at once!  Don't forget
to let the children participate by bringing an item (s) during the summer.

Summer Sunday School - With folks traveling during the summer, our Sunday School is a little less formal than during
the school year.  Nonetheless, Lauren can often use an extra set of hands to help on those Sundays when we have a
large number of children present.  You can help by being "on call" for a  Sunday, by which you make yourself available
to help if needed.  Check the sign up sheet in Trinity Hall for a Sunday or two on which you might be "on call" for our
children.

Sunday Refreshments - A sign up sheet is posted in the foyer of the Sanctuary with many open Sundays for
providing hospitality through the summer.  Check your calendar and sign up to host a Sunday or two this season.

A.C.E. says "Thanks" - On the table display in Trinity Hall you will find photos of this spring's Athens Chilesburg
Elementary School 5th grade class trip to Washington, DC.  You will also find thank you notes from many, if not all,
of the children who participated.  Walnut Hill is a major sponsor of this trip, making it possible for students to
participate who might otherwise not have the financial means to do so.

Peace to all.

Mike Ward
